SoundIsRed music is available everywhere online
With the release of its third studio album Party Bus, SoundIsRed is striking the techno-trance iron while it’s hot. Previous studio releases Ready To Burn and Building Character led producer/artist Kevin Depree into the underbelly of a rapidly growing electronic scene. With a burgeoning fan base and plenty of attention from electro-radio DJs, Party Bus is poised to make serious waves in the rapidly expanding SoundIsRed universe.
What sets SoundIsRed apart is as much the music as the method—on Party Bus, DePree continues to develop his signature style with an electronic kit, triggering lavishly designed beats under heady, dance-infused loops. On each track, he bangs out an electro-pop fusion of melody and anthem, hit by hit.
As an artist, DePree is truly prolific. SoundIsRed is the main foothold in a stream of multi-media projects swinging from graphic novel collaborations (Albatross Studios) to gallery shows, to the ongoing Syn-es-the-sia Project, a theatrical techno show that places a space-helmeted DePree on stage with a cast of rotating intergalactic characters.
A SoundIsRed set is as disarming as it is rare: behind every one-man track there is a pounding arsenal of flashing lights, frenetic lasers and dream-like fog, all driven and skillfully administered alongside an organic live beat and backed by a storyline that traces a group of interstellar characters. Performance influences apparent in the show flit between oddity-greats Gorillaz to Deadmau5 to the Blue Man Group–mold-breaking inspirations that inevitably move every SIR show beyond tired, old-news antics toward its own decidedly fresh and fictional universe. Because the project is populated by a small arsenal of flamboyant characters, SIR shows arenʼt complete until each appears on stage like an interspace apparition, dripping a strange kind of rapture onto the pulsing crowd. Meanwhile, helmeted land stick-spinning, the lead man SIR flashes between kit and synth like a circus-landed spaceman, issuing a heavy-handed trance with every click and hit. This crazed marriage of visual and audio feasts transcends the typical one-dimensional bounds of the dance/electro scene: SIR pounds out enthralling sets that fuel the hungry imaginations of the enraptured crowd, ensnaring them in his hopelessly fated world of electro-galactic dance.
Now well-versed in the ways of kits, production and performance, project creator Kevin DePree could boast his first production at the young age of 10. Dedicated and talented, he established himself quickly in the local industry, and by 19 he was touring with various groups across the U.S. and Europe. Thanks to hard-won skill and experience, DePree is a respected member of the vibrant coastal Michigan scene, making him well-poised to begin his climb to the ranks of the industry. It doesnʼt take long to notice that heʼs already well on his way; as the youthful mastermind behind SoundIsRed and Synesthesia, DePree is transporting fans to another realm, and his story is just getting started.
Synesthesia is the production of a sense impression relating to one sense or part of the body by stimulation of another sense or part of the body. This medical disorder embodies several key mechanics in a developing story by SoundIsRed.
The concept of Synesthesia has been with SoundIsRed ever since the project was started in 2010. The goal of Synesthesia is to tell an original story though music and without dialogue. Then utilizing current technology, create a theatrical performance incorporating all of the Synesthesia and SoundIsRed content.
As a first step towards the Synesthesia project, SoundIsRed worked with Albatross Studios (Grand Rapids, MI) on creating a graphic novel introducing key components of the Synesthesia world. This graphic novel is available for purchase as a hard cover book on the SoundIsRed store. Within the graphic novel are over 120 digital paintings tracing a small cast of characters through their futuristic yet post apocalyptic world. The Synesthesia story follows these characters own self discovery, quest for knowledge, and breaking their own limitations to achieve a greater purpose than they were designed for. The introductory book is also accompanied by an original score by SoundIsRed.
The Synesthesia live show was produced in collaboration with SoundIsRed and the WSCC percussion ensemble.

SoundIsRed owner and creator, Kevin DePree, is no stranger to the studio or the spotlight. At the young age of 10. DePree began studying the drum set. Dedicated and talented, he established himself quickly in the local industry, and by 19 he was touring with various groups across the U.S. and Europe. With his hard-won skill and experience, DePree is now a respected member of the vibrant coastal Michigan music scene, and he is well-poised to begin climbing the ranks of the national market.
He’s already well on his way. DePree has backed acts like Jimmy Stagger, Brena, the 2007 Blue Lake International Jazz Band, Cici Gramer, and Walter White, along with many other local and national groups. DePree has collected credits as a studio drummer for bands including the Lynn Thompson Band, Greg Nagy, Andy Frisinger, and Jim Alfredson’s latest progressive rock album.
Always dedicated to the development of a musical community, when he isn’t on stage or locked away rehearsing, DePree invests his time as a private instructor. His students are given a full stage experience at the culmination of the year, no matter their age. In addition to his teaching work, school clinics, presentations, and residencies have positioned DePree as one of West Michigan’s most in demand entertainers and educators.
Somehow, DePree manages to accomplish all of this while his pet project, SoundIsRed, pushes the limits of entertainment technology and modern drumming. As the youthful mastermind behind SoundIsRed and Synesthesia, DePree is transporting fans to another realm, and his story is just getting started.
